Houston team members get big surprise at Ascend Cares volunteer event

Ascend team members in Houston knew they had signed up for a day of volunteering — but they had no idea they'd get to meet the kids who would benefit from their efforts.

Team members and leadership from across the company spent Tuesday afternoon building 12 bikes for underprivileged children and 12 wheelchairs for paralyzed veterans. But the volunteers did not know the details of the event in advance — they only knew they would be going off-site to an Ascend Cares event. More than 100 team members from the Houston office were transported to a hotel in downtown Houston, where they were joined by Ascend leaders from around the world who were in town for an annual planning meeting.

After the bikes and wheelchairs were assembled, the 12 children surprised attendees by walking into the room and personally thanking team members for their new bikes.

The bikes were donated to children selected by Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston and the wheelchairs were donated to the Texas chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America.
